How Much Work Can Make Us Happy?

Job security is very important - everyone knows that! Having a stable job is important to keep your mind healthy and happy. But how much work do you actually need to do to be happy? A recent study finds it takes only a day of work per week!

    The Study Findings

The study was conducted in the United Kingdom, consisting of a sample size of more than 70,000 adults. It found that when unemployed people find a job, their mental health status improves but it takes only about eight hours of work per week to do that and there is no extra benefit with more time on the job.

Don't get so happy though as you most probably will still have to work 5 days a week (and when we say most probably here, we mean absolutely). Infact, the study itself is not suggesting that you work 1 day a week as it would not satisfy those who thrive on the job.

All the study suggested is that when it comes to having a stable mental health, many people would be within the normal parameters with working less than the standard 40 hours a week. This has implications for the future though. As more jobs get automated in the future, there will be fewer work opportunities. So if everyone were to work less than the current standard of 40 hours/week, it could lead to more job opportunities.

    The "Buts" of the Study

However, it is important to note that people do not only work to be mentally healthy. We work to pay our bills and pay for our children's college tuition. In analysing the research, the researchers did account for confounders such as household income, marital status, number of children in the family, respondents age, and physical health. However, these factors did not have any effect on the study findings.

It is also important to remember that the finding is the average finding in a large group. It is impossible to make conclusions about any single individual person because everyone's personality is different. For example, some people with the "conscientious" personality will need to more paid work in order to feel like they are contributing to the society in a meaningful way.

You also have to consider developing your job skills in order to be able to have a career. Those who are on a career path might be happy only when they are improving their skills and climbing the career ladder.

So, Should You Quit Your Job?

So should you work less? Not necessarily! But if you can afford to, then do so and spend more time with your family and friends!

    That's all for today!
