There have been rumours going on for quite some time about chicken wings causing cancer, particularly in women.
I actually didn't know about this rumor till today. I was going through my facebook and I saw this post by one of my friends:
It’s interesting isn’t it? The whole idea of it is so intriguing that it actually compelled me to do my own research on it.
And then only I came to know that this has actually been circulating over the internet since 2004, almost 7 years now!
Crazy isn’t it? But wait till you read the following story from 1999.
Now if you are reading these stories for the first time then don’t panic yet! Read the whole article first.

Crazy isn’t it? But wait till you read the following story from 1999.
There was a man who simply loved chicken neck. He would have his daily chicken rice with all the chicken necks. After a couple of years of this exotic diet, he noticed that his breast was growing bigger; that got him so worried that he sought medical help. Then it emerged that he had been on a high female-hormone course all this time. |

These stories by themselves may be false but they do contain some truth. And that is why they sell.
For those of you who live in the US, Canada or Europe, there is good news. The usage of any kind of growth
hormone including steroids is in poultry is strictly prohibited in your countries. So you are safe!
But let me tell you one thing though, administration of growth hormones in cattle is allowed in your countries
and this is considered safe by the FDA and USDA.
So what about the rest of us? It is true that in some parts of the world chickens are given growth hormones.
But these hormones are usually given in the form of tablets or pills along with their normal food. Injecting the
hormones through the neck or wings is not a typical practice. So even if some of the residues of the oral
hormones were to accumulate in the body there is no reason as to why they should accumulate specifically in
the neck and wings.
Now don’t start to think that if not the chicken neck or wings then maybe the residues will accumulate in some
other part of the body of a chicken. According to the FDA, "residue levels of hormones in food have been
demonstrated to be safe, as they are well below any level that would have a known effect in humans."
But this is where things start to get tricky.
In Egypt, using of steroidal growth hormones in poultry is allowed and a research conducted by the WHO
revealed that their chicken and other poultry contains high levels of estradiol (a type of female hormone
estrogen). Scientists have shown that there is a direct relationship between prolong use of oral contraceptive
pills (which for your information basically contains high levels of estrogen and another female hormone
progesterone) and the development of specific cancers in women. Now this is a bad news isn’t it? Because
theoretically it means prolong consumption of poultry containing high levels of estrogen could create problems!
The WHO finished the study by saying, “anabolic agents in beef and chicken entail a special risk to public
health”. Now what does that mean? Are we supposed to avoid chicken and beef altogether?
This is what FDA said about the usage of growth hormones in cattle, “Certain steroid hormones have been
approved for use at very low concentrations to increase the rate of weight gain and/or improve feed efficiency
in beef cattle.”
So if you are from the US, Canada, and Europe be happy to know that the steroid hormones given to cattle
are very minimum. So don’t worry.
If you are from Egypt, then contact the WHO!
And for the rest of us, we can do three things.
First, we can pray to God so that He gives us chicken and beef with little to no steroid hormone.
Second, we can grow our own poultry and cattle.
Third, if you can then try and contact your chicken and cattle provider to see how they grow their chicken
and cattle. This part is actually easier for us who are from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan because we don’t
buy our chicken and beef from shopping malls!
What’s your view on this? Leave a comment and let me know!
That's all for today!

I was a vegetarian for 8 years when a blood test revealed that I was very short on B vitamins. The doctor offered me shots or pills. When I asked if there was any natural way to get those missing vitamins, she said I could eat red meat about 3 times a week. Moral of the story? MODERATION
